Writing
When I’m not in book-writing mode, I consider myself first and foremost a journalist. I’ve written hundreds of articles as a staffer for magazines and newspapers or on assignment as a freelancer. I’m humbled by the kind remarks I receive from editors. Ministry that Gets Messy, my cover story for ByFaith, was awarded a first place by the Evangelical Press Association. Another ByFaith article that drew considerable reader interest was Transforming Neighborhoods by Transforming Public Schools.
“Carolyn writes beautifully, and her work never fails to add style and substance to our magazine.”
- Richard Doster, editor of ByFaith, flagship publication of the Presbyterian
Church in America, and novelist, including a Christy Award
finalist, Safe at Home, and Crossing the Lines
As an undergraduate and graduate student, people generously gave me a hand up with encouragement, constructive criticism and helpful comments. I try to pass these along when I judge journalism and other writing contests.
“Carolyn is an excellent judge for our annual journalism contest and one I can come to among a stable of the world’s finest professionals. She can be counted on to provide thoughtful and detailed feedback to college journalists.”
- Joni B. Hannigan, managing editor, Florida Baptist Witnessand co-founder of the annual Baptist Press Collegiate Journalism Conference and contest coordinator
